This week in news

Thought I'd make an entry here on this last day of the month, now that the damn computer is free and I actually feel like sitting down and typing something up.

Last night I learned a valuable lesson in working with other people. I mean, I consider myself to work fairly well with others; it is always a work-in-progress of course, but I think I've come a long way in many respects, too. There's a person I work with -- okay several -- but one in particular who has really, really been getting to me lately, so much so that it has successfully gotten in the way of me doing my job.

In fact, he got me sooooooooo worked up into a lather that a curious thing happened: at one point last night, I just shut down, because I realized I either needed to say something to this person or let it go. I didn't know what to do. So I didn't do anything. And it wound up being the best thing I could have done, because guess what? It enabled me to see that I'm not accomplishing anything by letting anyone get to me that badly.

Just when you think you've learned a lesson, oh looky, you get a chance to learn it all over again!!!

Now, I just need to work on not taking my frustrations home with me. If I can do that, then I *REALLY* will have accomplished something!

Now, on to some other things that have been on my mind lately ...

Michigan State Spartans -- I have to admit, working in a place that is crawling with MSU grads it's kind of hard not to get caught up with all the fervor and madness. I will be rooting for the Spartans this Saturday. I had a veritable litany about them that I'd written as I watched the game on Sunday. I am now officially an NCAA fan, as well as an NBA (hey, the NBA players come from SOMEwhere, don't they???), as a result of this remarkable season. I guess the tournaments made history this weekend -- it's the first time that 3 of the 4 games played in the Elite Eight went into overtime, including the Spartans vs. U. of K.

Terri Schiavo -- I really don't know what to say about this one. The whole thing is so wrong, and so sad. How come the whole entire world saw how wrong it all was, everyone but the Florida and Supreme Court justices? Where's the "justice" in that??? For Terri's sake, I'm glad she finally passed, but it's more terrible than words can say that she had to die the way she did. I'm inclined to believe what her parents and siblings had to say about her final days; I'll bet she was trying vainly to communicate, trying to say that she wanted to live. Well, hopefully something good will come from this after it's all said and done. Although I guess there's not much more to say *or* do at this point.

Today on the Jane Pauley show I saw *THE* cutest creature I have ever had the pleasure to lay eyes on -- a dog by the name of "Mr. Winkle". Here's a link to it: http://www.mrwinkle.com/diary8-2004.htm It's probably not the greatest picture of him, but it's the closest one I could find to what he looked like to me when I saw him on the Jane Pauley show today. (I found out lots of things about this little bundle of fur that I never imagined in looking for this pic; for instance, his owner is a widely-known, well-respected photographer for several well-known magazines. Which might explain how he wound up on the Jane Pauley show, not to mention all the other places he's been seen.)

Well, on the show today ... I saw for myself, I don't know what it is, but even before I knew anything about the damn dog, I was just immediately touched by his ... whatever it is he has!! Jane Pauley described it as "charisma". Some kind of je ne sais quois, as they say. I'm not sure the pix on the website really do justice to what I saw on the videotaped talk show today. But he is one cute dog. And I am jealous of his owner.

It's the end of March. As usual, it's kind of bittersweet; there was St. Patrick's Day; there was Easter. There was the first day of spring. But there was also: my bout with a bad cold; my dad's death anniversary; a bitter political feud whose casualty was a brain-damaged woman getting fed through a tube. So I'm not totally glad to see March end, but not totally sad, either.

Look out, here comes April -- !

Ha! I found a picture from Jane Pauley's website, and it's so much better!

(His tongue sticks out like that all the time, he's so darn cute!!!)

Copyright 2005 Jane Pauley Show -- Thank you Jane Pauley, and Lara Jo Regan for letting me put this pic on my blog! :)

After a week of so much depressing news, this little guy is the perfect panacea. :) Enjoy!
