Pope John Paul II has died; Attack on Abu-Ghraib prison

The news came down over the wires today at just a few minutes before 3pm: Pope John Paul II has died.

He was 84 years old.

The Polish-born Pontiff led the Catholic church for more than a quarter of a century and is history's most-travelled pope.

Official time of death is 9:37pm (2:37 pm our time).

Insurgents fired rocket-propelled grenades and set off two car bombs Saturday evening at the Abu Ghraib prison in western Baghdad, wounding 20 U.S. soldiers and 12 prisoners, the U.S. military said.
The attack, carried out by 40 to 60 militants, began as darkness fell on the city, 1st Lt. Adam Rondeau said. The prison has come under attack before.
