Writer's Block: Personality Trait = Trouble

What personality trait has gotten you in the most trouble?

Without a doubt my outspokenness. I am outspoken because many times things that upset me - or thrill me - cause me to have an immediate reaction, especially if the situation touches me emotionally, whether positively or negatively. The first thing I do is open my mouth and utter my reaction. Reacting that way would have been fine if my boss and supervisor saw things the same way I did, but they often don't, so I made myself look like a loose cannon to them which they perceived to be a threat.

It has gotten me in trouble in other ways too. I have alienated people who otherwise would have been my friends, y'know, the kind of people you WANT to be friends with. I have had to learn that sometimes it is valuable to keep your mouth shut. However, that being said, I also believe that there are times when it is absolutely necessary to speak up and speak out - sexual harassment, sexual abuse, corrupt office politics that take fundamental rights away from others, gossip that is damaging, animal abuse ... that's the type of thing that needs someone who is outspoken but then there is the issue of tact. I'm not good at being tactful when my emotions are touched; often I am quite blunt, and it took me a long time to realize that I damage the issue I want to help more by not stopping to think before I speak.

So stay tuned, as this is truly a work in progress!
